Maisie's Turn

Maisie's first day in JEANS! I love hand-me-downs :) We had some friends over in Maisie's "age group" last week too... some under a year and some brand new (mostly siblings of Francie's friends... but we won't call them hand-me-downs Maisie Moo!) It was fun to see siblings playing but the big kids were too busy running around to notice the babes.

Knocked out at her own playdate. (She must have learned this from Francie... the day before Jannie came by at the tail end of Francie's playgroup and Francie said "I wanna go to your house Jannie" and started putting her shoes on. Jannie said "Oh but Francie your friends are here and want to play!" to which Francie replied, over her shoulder as she walked towards the car "They'll leave!")

Silly girl (oh and she calls this move "Dancin, Dancin' on a POLE!!")

Toddlers and Waddlers

We've had a pretty regular playgroup that meets each week for the last year or so called "Toddle On Over" :) Some of the babies we met through the Stanford Moms Group, some at Cafe Barrone's Moms lunches and some through friends. It's a fun group to see getting so big and so many new siblings popping up! We hosted everyone over last week to play in the playhouse and the water table finally... we hung out in the new and improved side yard since the back part of the yard is completely torn up (long story- next post :) It was a nice sunny day for the Toddlers to Toddle On Over and for about half of the moms who are pregnant again to Waddle on Over! (sorry couldn't resist)

Horse Trough Water Table Project

My crazy water table project is finally done! It turned into a much bigger project than I thought but it was fun to work on together with my handy hubby. I wanted an outdoor water table for Francie and Maisie to play in but couldn't find any I liked online (Amazon let me down). A friend said they had cool fountains at a place in Napa that were just oval horse troughs which I thought was brilliant so I called Heff on the drive home from his first hunt and asked him if he could stop at a feed store and pick me up a giant water trough. He was a little confused but agreed to haul a four foot aluminum water trough from Eastern Nevada home to Menlo Park. What a nice husband :) We didn't get to start working on it until after the playhouse move so I had some time to figure out how to make it somewhat resemble what I envisioned in my head. Heff had some good ideas too and after a few trips to the irrigation and hardware stores this is what we finally came up with. It seems to work and has been a big hit in the backyard so far...

Here's a little "Horse Trough Water Table" tutorial... ;)

We made a false bottom "table" out of 4×4's and plywood to fit snuggly in the horse trough and leave about a 3-4 inch drop from the rim

then drilled a hole in the center for the 1 1/2 inch copper pipe

I bought a bunch of tiles at Home Depot in the kitchen/bath tiling section and then got some glass beads at Michael's Craft Supply and decorative (plaster/fake so they won't break) sand dollar shells in the clearance bin at Pottery Barn

We couldn't decide between copper and galvanize steel pipe but finally went with copper because it looks so much prettier and is safer for the water kids will inevitably drink (they guy at Home Depot tried to talk me into using PVC since it so much cheaper but I had to explain to him it would look really crappy on a water feature)

Heff cut smaller pieces off a 10 foot section of copper pipe for between the fittings

then my favorite part... soldering the copper with a blow torch! Heff started but let me do the second half- it was fun to play with matches and fire and solder ;)

this stuff is pretty cool! After you put some chemical stuff on the inside, heating up the pipe really hot makes it suck in the solder stuff. It turns to a silver gob first... I kinda thought the Terminator might jump out at me when it did that.

We made four different outlets at 90 degree angles apart, reaching about 3 feet up from the table. We plumbed clear irrigation tubing into each arm of the fountain so the water pressure would be a little more evenly distributed and make it all the way to the top. THIS might have been the hardest part (judging from the four letter words flying out of my husbands mouth :) We got three of four done with black drip-line tubing but it was not going to happen to get the fourth one in so we pulled it all out and started over with a smaller, clear irrigation tubing.

Then Heff cut a big opening in the trough so we could get to the underworkings and fix things if we ever needed to (since the top had to be caulked/water tight)

We cut a piece of "HardieBacker" to fit over the plywood, two semi-circles to fit snuggly. We also put a kitchen drain in that can be plugged up or not to fill the 3-4 inch pool with water or to just let it drain as it fills. The water drains on the side to a pipe that goes right out to the underground street drainage. We didn't do a pump or recycled water so it would always be clean water. Then we taped up the edges and seams and finally I got to start tiling! I didn't really know what I was doing but figured I couldn't mess this up too much for kids to play in.

A work in progress... Jannie suggested I "pique assiette"/break up the big blue tiles and I had to get a few more pieces (this was not a single digit run-to-home-depot project!

and the finisihed product! Can't say it was quick and easy but it was fun to do and keeps Francie entertained. Hopefully it sustains the test of little hands (and feet! Francie isn't supposed to walk on it like she did in the top photo since it's slightly dangerous but it will hold her :)

Monday BBQ

Monday around lunch time we ventured over to Burgess Park for another BBQ hosted by Jerry & Georgia Carter to welcome the triplets home and get together with all of their friends. Bethy flew up for the day (10 hours... what a good sister!) and my brothers both came down from the city with their girlfriends Emily and Allison too. I had to pry Heff away from sweating away in the backyard on the new outdoor kitchen/BBQ (I told you one project lead to 4- now 5- maybe 6 or 7!) Francie gobbled down some hot dogs while Bethy teased her ("don't antagonize me Beffy!") and Maisie was a social little roller and made some new friends.

Fun Family Visit

Saturday Oma, Opa, Kat and Donald drove down for a night to spend some time with the babies (and maybe with us too :) The girls took a trip to Stanford Shopping Center while the guys and Francie rebuilt our BBQ in the backyard so we could grill tri-tips for dinner- a little motivation goes a long way. Oma brought some fun new art supplies for Francie- she and Oma made some creations together. We helped Kat return some wedding gifts (another good use for the double stroller) and did some shopping. I got new bedding and new pillows on sale at Macy's... ahhhh (as I blog from bed on my laptop) Mark, Sarah & Clara came over for dinner at our house and too- Clara is soo adorable now, I missed pictures of the babes, Clara was trying to go to sleep but next time I will. Thanks for making it down for a quick visit everybody!

"Yay! I get to cook with Oma, Aunt Kat and Aunt Sarah!"

Hanging out in the backyard

Aunt Kat made a cool Oreo Cookie cake with the molds Emily G. gave her for a shower gift- they worked great Em!

Sleepover with Aunt Kat and Donald! Francie said Donald could "sleep out there on the couch." She loves her godmother

Finn's First Birthday Party

Monday after the BBQ we went to one of Maisie's playgroup friend's FIRST birthday party... it was a serious birthday event! They had "The Sippy Cups" band play a concert, had great food, incredible decorations and cupcakes and lots of fun stuff for the kids to do. I don't think you can top a party like this one! Fun colors and some great decorating ideas... Happy Birthday Finn!

Francie and her friend Summer found the giraffe balloons on their way in

The girls kept asking if it was cake time... I wonder why!

Earplugs for the concert of course ;)

Waiting for the band to come on...

It's The Sippy Cups!

Dad and Maisie watching and dancing from above... my husband doesn't always jump at the chance to dance with me but he loves any excuse to dance with his little girls! I'm not offended ;)

Heff not sure what to think of this... and after suggesting we throw a low-key birthday for Francie this year he now thinks my version of a big bash IS low key... (I feel like Tori)

Happy Birthday Finn! Thanks for inviting us to your bash.

Pizza Party with The Carters

Sunday night we had a pizza party at Jannie's house with the Carters. Ryan and Kim were in town with their triplets Danny, Drew & Dylan so we let the kids play while we all caught up. We grew up with Ryan, Beth and Jill- their house is three doors down and we carpooled to school... lots of fun memories causing trouble as kids :) Francie is a few months younger than the triplets- she showed them all around Jannie and Grampa's backyard.

Maisie has been so much fun this weekend! She is almost sitting up on her own and laughs whenever Francie talks to her. I could just eat her up :) Sorry for a few too many pictures of me but I loved Maisie's expressions in these pictures... ABA thinks she looks like a mini-Mary :)

Kicking it off...

Friday we went over to Jannie's to check out the Pottery Barn Kids shoot and played for awhile before venturing out (outside my Menlo Park bubble that is, I mean I had to get on the freeway!) where Jannie wanted to check out a park in San Mateo that had a little choo-choo train ride for kids. The train was closed weekdays after August (Wally World? San Mateo felt about that far :) so we settled for some swinging, sliding and then a trip to Talbott's toy store.

Everywhere you turn at Jannie and Grampa's house this week PBK has cameras, lights, props and cute Spring baby stuff for the magazine. I couldn't give away their secrets (the dining room is now 75% pink/green striped walls and there are giant playhouses painted in ABA's room) but this is what we were tripping over in the hallways...

Francie usually loves to take baths in Jannie's big bathtub but they were shooting in Jannie's room so she settled for a shower in the sewing room bath (where jannie and grampa are sleeping this week since their room is a nursery :)

Snoozing through the excursion to Central Park in San Mateo

Swinging high and higher

Ready for the toy store in Jannie's stroller... Maisie's first time riding like a big girl! Francie lost it at first but luckily was easily distracted by a giant toy store full of bikes, dolls and playhouses (her current obsessions)

Escaping the Heat

Last weekend when Heff was on his hunt we treated ourselves to a girls slumber party at Rosewood to get out of our sauna of a house! It was a fun weekend by the pool and "on vacation" five miles away from home. My friend Christian came up and slumber-partied with us (she quickly learned what it's like to sleep with two babies in a hotel room, not much peace all night!) and my parents came up to swim and have dinner with us too. We took advantage of a late-late checkout an swam all day Sunday too. When can we go back? :)

Ready to relax

Here comes Grampa!

Maisie was pretty happy in her pink little crib (and impressive set up Rosewood with the appropriate size diapers and wipes in room, baby bath tub, cute pink crib set and diaper genie!)

Halloween at Jannie's House!

Pottery Barn Kids Halloween issue is out with lots of fun pictures from the photoshoot at Jannie and Grampa's house! I was looking at the cute pictures in the store for awhile before I realized it was Jannie's house in the background. PBK was back all of last week shooting their spring collection... Francie likes to go mooch off their catering and Jannie likes to show her granddaughter off to the photographers and make them tell her she is cuter than any of their models... biased grandmother's opinion :)

In Other News...

The new, improved and expanded playpit is done! I haven't been blogging as regularly as usual (and hearing about it from my baby sister in Nashville :) We've been busy and Francie & Maisie have been fighting off colds and an ear infection each, no fun. But we are glad to be done with one phase of the Great Backyard Makeover (this is what happens when you buy a playhouse too big for your backyard) and enjoying the summer heatwave. Here are a few pictures I haven't blogged with a little of what we've been up to.

Francie has been really into art projects lately. Maisie can't wait til she can jump right in.

We've been in the backyard as much as possible enjoying the fruits of our labor! Most of it is done but as always we have a few projects in line for this weekend (one of them putting our BBQ back together after it was dismantled for the playhouse move!)

We've been hosting friends...

and playdates...

torturing the dog...

and the chickens...

and trying to keep Maisie happy (tough job)

We've been lucky enough to have Emmy for a few hours a couple times in between school and soccer!

and as usual she took a couple great pictures of the girls

Silly Sansie

"I'll get her back one day."

We "let" Daddy go back to eastern Nevada (or "Nazada" as Sansie says) to give that bow another shot to fill the deer tag. He was only gone for 48 hours this time but went BY HIMSELF so we were very glad to have him home safely. He promised me he would be extra careful and took his GPS tracker- but as the crazy bow hunter he ran into on the mountain said "Woah. You are hard core." (Heff filled me in that the camo face paint might have tipped him off. I didn't know about this part of the hunting attire... he is crazy!) No deer this time either but he loved his solo hunt and was probably the first guy to use Vibram FiveFingers while on a mission to kill a large animal :) Here is his 80+ pound pack he hauled around on his back, OUCH.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Last Wednesday we ventured down to Monterey for Francie's first trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium! We planned to meet my good friends Janna and Nancy with their kids and then at the last minute Heff decided he couldn't miss Francie's first time seeing all the fish so he came too (even if it meant pushing his hunting trip back a day, what a good dad ;) The aquarium wasn't too packed since most schools had started but it was still pretty crazy with 8 kids between the three families running around. Francie loved it, we'll have to go back!

It's windy in Monterey!

Honey had to tag along to see all the shishys too

Janna and Nancy's Aunt Dea gave Maisie this cute pink ruffle outfit so she had to dress the part with a big ruffle bow too ;)

Heffernan, Seubert & French, LLP

They get it! Brian left the big firm life when we were expecting Francie and hasn't looked back. He paired up with a partner, Dan Seubert, last year and then just recently they joined forces with Tom French and they officially launched Heffernan, Seubert & French, LLP. Their law offices are upstairs in the same building I run Academic Trainers and Brilliant Babies from so we have a convenient little compound :) Dan and Tom (and Tim Watson, a Will & Trust lawyer who shares space with them) are all so nice to Francie and Maisie and put up with all the little rugrats upstairs at Brilliant Babies. Francie, Maisie and I are so proud of Daddy!

We went down to Fremont Park downtown Menlo Park last week to take some photos of the guys for their fancy new website. Francie had fun running around barefoot with her three favorite lawyers (besides her Superlawyer Grampa of course!)

and Dan Seubert

Congratulations on the official launch of the website guys!

Bonjour Pierre!

Last week we had a french TV crew come over to interview us about genetics and 23andMe. It was a last minute favor for my friend Anne and not what we expected when we woke up that morning but still pretty entertaining! They filmed Francie playing with toys for awhile, asked me a slew of questions while I sat with both girls, filmed me at my computer checking out my 23andMe data and a bunch of other shots. They said it was for an hour segment on the main french tv channel on genetic testing... probably like last time we'll be on for 2.2 seconds and no one will see it unless you live in France! As Francie said to them... "I tell Oma's goat, Bonjour Pierrre!"

Oh Sansie

Let The Fun Begin! Everybody loves the playhouse. We've been dressing up, playing with neighbors, hosting playgroup, building towers, and cooking "shood" (food). When people ask Francie what her name is and she says "San-sie" I say "It's Francie. She can't say her F's." Well the other day Sansie told a stranger "This is my sister, her name is Maisie. She can't say her F's." Guess I should let her be Sansie for awhile....
